Principal's Message

Dear Tigers, Parents, Teachers, and everyone who loves and supports a Tiger,

Happy New Year!  I hope you had a relaxing break and are ready to start the second semester.

Much has happened at AHS over the break.  Hallways and the cafeteria have been painted, the new front entrance security vestibule is 99% complete, and the new stage is about 75% complete.  We still have a lot to do, but I think you’ll like what you see when you return.

During the first week of the second semester, we will be issuing AHS lanyards to all students.  New students and those who reported having lost their IDs will receive replacement IDs.  Students will begin wearing student IDs while on campus.  Again, the purpose of this is to enhance campus security by making it easier to identify anyone who does not belong on campus.

Our next Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting will be at 5:30PM on Thursday, January 10, in the AHS library.  So far this year, we’ve had fewer than ten parents attend these monthly meetings.  I’d love to see a full house.  I need your input on issues such as the campus perimeter security barrier, the closed campus proposal, cafeteria menu offerings, car line/bus line traffic flow, our new AHS Hall of History, and any other issues or questions affecting the AHS campus that you’d like to bring up.  If you’d like to attend but your schedule won’t allow, our PAC meetings will be live-streamed on Facebook beginning January 10.  We’ll post more details on this here on our website before the meeting.

You’ve probably heard about Governor Lujan Grisham’s executive order regarding PARCC testing.  While we look forward to these changes, please be aware that this year, students will still be taking the PARCC or portions of it.  Participation in PARCC is still a requirement for graduation.  Our school grade still depends largely on student achievement on PARCC, and federal law still requires us to have at least 95% of our students complete these exams.  The AHS school grade suffered greatly last year because about 6% of AHS students did not show up for PARCC testing.  Please help AHS and the entire Alamogordo community by ensuring ALL our students participate in and do their best on PARCC this year.

Thank you again for your support in ensuring our students and staff are safe and secure; developing positive relationships among students, teachers, parents, and the community; and inspiring a culture of excellence so that every AHS student can say, “I GET to be an AHS Tiger!”  See you at the PAC meeting on January 10, 5:30PM!
